Potential actions

Research is ongoing into other approaches that may help reduce on-farm emissions including soil carbon, stand-off pads or winter housing and manure storage. Some are showing promise, but more evidence is needed under New Zealand farming conditions.

  • Winter housing/stand-off pads

Removing stock from pasture during winter or at other times when soils are very wet can help to reduce nitrous oxide emissions.

  • Manure storage

Manure storage provides the opportunity for some livestock farms to recycle valuable nutrients to the land. Stored manure also emits methane.

  • Soil carbon

Some actions may help retain or even increase soil carbon. Research is ongoing.

  • Once-a-day milking

Making a deliberate decision to milk only once a day throughout lactation can, under the right circumstances, reduce emissions and maintain profitability.
